Smaggle buys her laptop online at Dick Smith.

I realised a few weeks ago that my beloved Macbook, purchased second hand from Mr Smaggle about four years ago is rather past its use by date. As mentioned in a previous Lustable article, the Smaggle household is exclusively run on Apple products so the choice of new laptop was easy. Macbook Air. Naturally. The main problem with this scenario was the purchasing of such an important item online. I’m on the highly strung end of the spectrum and I worried excessively about the delivery. Here’s how it went.

Dick Smith was the store of choice and the shopping experience was flawless. They don’t use couriers. Just a signature and identification when you pick up your item at your local post office. You can also pay with PayPal. I’m supremely lazy and can never be bothered to get my credit card out of my bag while shopping online but with PayPal I can keep my butt on the couch and just enter my email address. Brilliant. The shipping was $7.50 which is probably the cheapest domestic shipping I’ve found for a large and valuable item like a laptop. Another point worth mentioning is that Apple have a standard pricing policy which means that no matter where you buy their products they will be the same price or slightly cheaper if the retailer is feeling generous, like Dick Smith is right now.

When I bought Mr Smaggle’s old computer I also inherited his well worn laptop case. My new Macbook Air is too tiny for the old laptop bag and therefore needed a new home. I bought a felt laptop sleeve from Pack and Smooch on Etsy. It hasn’t arrived yet but I imagine it’s perfect. It’s made by a product designer in Germany called Clemens. Can you get any cooler than that?

Have you ever bought something expensive online? Where you nervous about the delivery? How did it go?

*Buying expensive items online needn’t be a headache now PayPal buyer protection has kicked in! In the case that your item doesn’t arrive, or it is significantly different from the way it was described, you may be covered up to $20,000 if you purchased via PayPal.  Click here for more information.
