Smaggle decks out her kitchen in Bison Ceramics

A little while ago a friend of mine brought Design Sponge to my attention and since then I have been utterly obsessed with having a bright, airy kitchen full of ceramic mixing bowls and pots in perfect natural shades. Bison ceramics is a Canberra company and their studio sits in the heart of Pialligo, a gorgeous area of the city that’s full of antique furniture stores, nurseries and artist’s residences.
Originally you could only buy their goods in Canberra but they recently opened stores in Melbourne and Sydney. For those of you live out of area they have an online store where you can purchase a few their delectable pieces.
Company founder Brian Tunks studied archaeology at the Australian National University and it was on an excavation in the Middle East that he developed a love of ceramics. Bison products are non-disposable and are designed to last a lifetime. The company is also environmentally conscious, using recyclable packing materials and renewable energy to power their kilns. As their product comes from the earth they are committed to environmental sustainability. They ask the question, where will your Bison be in a thousand years time? With their classic, sturdy pieces they are bound to be heirlooms in the kitchens of your great, great grandchildren. Or your great, great, great, great, great grandchildren… however many ‘greats’ equals a thousand years.
I bought a few of their mugs in sage and milk, a Julie bowl in spearmint and vase in parchment. I must say I’m feeling incredibly grown up making quality purchases of the household nature. I never thought I’d get as excited over new kitchenware as I do new shoes but Bison will do that to you.
I also have a soft spot for the Canberra company being a born and bred ‘Berra gal and I love to support our artists. And who doesn’t want to drink from mugs made by an archaeologist? Tunks is like the Indian Jones of ceramics.
Any Bison addicts out there? How do you like their products? I’m a long time admirer, first time buyer and I’d love to hear your feedback!
